DEAR READER YOU'LL LOVE DEAR GENRE
Dear Genre shares not only his life journey but musical one too.
What ways have you changed your life to be able to live your best life?
A few ways I’ve changed the way I live to give my shot at living my best life are through cutting chemicals out of my life. I’m not ashamed to say I lived under the control of addiction for a long time. It wasn’t until I decided to strive to cut them out of my life that I started to feel like I was truly living. The second most significant way I’ve changed the way I live to be able to try and live my best life has come through becoming more selective of the people I choose to be around. Maybe it’s come with age or maybe I’m just less patient than I used to be. It’s been positive for my schedule as well as my mental health.
What music should new fans be listening to?
I love bands that come with a message and something to stand for. Right now, I think new fans should be looking into bands like IDLES, Grouplove, Biffy Clyro & Amyl and the Sniffers.
I feel fortunate to say that I have been performing live recently. It’s far less frequent as it was pre-pandemic however I think that’s allowed time to make the shows that we do play really count. Over the years, this project has played in many different arrangements but currently, Dear Genre is a two-piece electric act with drums & guitar.
Any advice you can give to artists out of experience?
Some advice I sometimes give to other artists that I’ve learned through my experiences is that it always pays more to be doing things genuinely than to be doing things because you think they’ll look cool or become popular. The whole point of being an artist is to present our most honest, vulnerable selves and if we’re not doing that then why are we doing it at all? Who are you most inspired by in this industry?
Currently, I’m most inspired by a band called IDLES. I feel that they’re in the industry for all the right reasons and they’ve brought me inspiration, hope and a new perspective.
Upcoming projects you can share with us?
An upcoming project that I’ve been excited to talk about are my “Summer Singles.” It consists of two songs that were recorded at the same time but will be released separately as singles. The first song to be released is called “Body of Water” and will be out on all streaming platforms October 1st. "Body of Water" mixes ethereal shoegaze & hard hitting pop with a topic matter that may leave you with more questions than answers. It will be accompanied by a music video that will be released the same day.
