TALKING ALL THINGS MUSIC WITH COUNTRY ARTIST, SARAH HARRALSON!!

We can't wait to hear all your new music, Sarah!!

Hi Sarah! Thanks for being here today!

Thanks so much for having me!

Is it harder to write or produce a song?

Sometimes it depends on the song, but overall, I would say it’s harder to produce a song. There’s so much that goes into production, and so many ways a song could be produced. When I’m producing my own music, I always like extra sets of ears on it, because sometimes a producer can hear something that can be added to the track that I never would have even thought of. Production is important because it can convey a certain emotion to an audience that maybe the song doesn’t evoke acoustically.

Do you ever experience writer's block? What do you do to get over it?

Absolutely. We all have days that are harder than others to come up with ideas. I recently read a great quote from Jeff Tweedy in his book, How to Write One Song, and he basically states that inspiration doesn’t always hit us out of the blue; we have to invite it in. So when I’m hitting a block, I will take snippets of ideas I already have and build off of them or go off a writing prompt that day. Even taking a walk and changing the scenery can help inspiration trickle back.

What is your musical background? Who or what got you into wanting to make music?

My Granddad was a bluegrass musician in East Tennessee. He really inspired me to pursue music. Songwriting was always my escape to get my feelings out, and my Mom encouraged me to take piano lessons when I was fourteen. In high school, I participated in musical theater and taught myself guitar. After high school, I knew I wanted to move to Nashville to pursue music and songwriting.

What is your favorite thing about performing live shows?

The feeling it gives me. I am always nervous before I play a show, but when I am playing, I feel fearless. I think it’s the notion that people are listening to my voice and what I have to say that puts me in my happy place and makes the stage feel like home.

Do you have a favorite song to perform or that you are looking to performing?

As far as my own songs, “Love On Lease” is definitely a favorite one to play because I can use my full range on that one and it usually gets the best response live. One of my favorite covers to perform is “Make You Feel My Love” originally by Bob Dylan.

What kind of music are you listening to right now?

The last playlist I had on was a country love song playlist that was perfect for Valentine’s Day!

Do you listen to any podcasts that are related to music? If so, which ones?

Yes! I really love Song Exploder, And the Writer Is…, and The Climb.

Do you like to collaborate with others? What is that process like?

Absolutely. Most of my songs come from collaboration. Usually, we see if any of us have an idea or song concept in mind we want to write about, and from there, we start to build a melody and co-write the lyrics until a song is formed!

What is next for you?

I am currently recording new music, and I hope to soon return to even more shows and continue writing songs for others as well.
